Celebrating Words: Gulzar and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Join Jnanpith Laureates

Two distinguished figures in Indian literature, renowned poet-lyricist Gulzar and esteemed Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, were honored with the 58th Jnanpith Award for 2023. President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious award at a ceremony held in New Delhi.

Unfortunately, Gulzar, who is 90 years old, was unable to attend the event due to health reasons. President Murmu acknowledged his absence, sending well wishes for his speedy recovery and hoping he would continue his significant contributions to art, literature, society, and the nation. She praised his dedication to literary creation over many decades, noting that he “established tenderness amidst harshness” through his Urdu writing. Gulzar’s impressive career had previously been recognized with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013.

On the other hand, Rambhadracharya, a 75-year-old Hindu spiritual leader, educator, and writer, was present to receive his award. He is the founder and head of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot. The Sanskrit scholar was presented with a citation plaque, a cash prize, and a bronze replica of Vagdevi Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. His extensive literary achievements were highlighted, including writing over 240 books and four epics. He had also received the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his contributions. Looking ahead, Hindi author Vinod Kumar Shukla was named the recipient of the 59th Jnanpith Award for 2024, signaling continued recognition for literary excellence in India. Sources
