Remembering a Revolutionary Voice: Pawan Kalyan Promises Memorial for Poet Avantsa Soma Sundar in Pithapuram

Pithapuram News Online: Avantsa Soma Sundar, though perhaps a less familiar name in Telugu literature today, was a powerful and revolutionary poet whose work stirred Andhra Pradesh deeply over seven decades ago. His 1946 poetry collection, “Vajrayudham” (The Thunderbolt), ignited the socio-political landscape with its progressive and radical ideas. This magnum opus, particularly its passionate portrayal of the Telangana Armed Rebellion, sent tremors through the administration of the then Nizam ruler.

Soma Sundar’s poem “Banisala Dandayatra” (The Slave’s March) was a strong piece of writing that directly attacked the power of the Nizam. Until 1950, “Vajrayudham” was the subject of numerous critical reviews, ultimately leading to its ban by both the Nizam Government and the Composite Madras State on February 6, 1950. Soma Sundar held significant connections to the regions of Pithapuram, Annavaram, and Hyderabad.

Recently, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan promised the literary community of Pithapuram to establish a memorial center dedicated to Avantsa Soma Sundar in the town. This commitment followed a personal meeting between the Deputy CM and the noted writer, Shri Kilari Gauri Naidu.

During the meeting, Shri Naidu, representing the literary circles of Pithapuram, submitted a proposal for the establishment of a “Peetika Puradeesha Charitra Cultural and Research Centre” in the constituency. This proposed research center aims to serve as a vital hub for the literary community, facilitating the preservation of the region’s history and the organization of regular literary discussions.

On the same occasion, Mr. Naidu also highlighted the significant contributions of Avantsa Soma Sundar to Telugu literature, advocating for a memorial. Representing the Soma Sundar Literary Trust, he presented Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan with the literary works of Shri Avantsa Soma Sundar.

Avantsa Soma Sundar’s extensive body of work includes notable collections such as Vajrayudham, Kaahalai, Godavari Jala Pralayam Raktakshi, Satchitanandam, Megharanjani, Somarasam, Minugurulu, Ashala Kireetam, Vennela Konaseema, Ralina Mutyalu, Maa Vooru Maarindi, Akshaya Tarangini, Marxism and Agataniki Subharambham.
