Veera Gunamma, born into poverty in Rajapuram village, Mandasa mandal (Srikakulam District), emerged as a pivotal figure in the struggle against feudal oppression in the British era. Her father’s upbringing instilled in her a deep sense of resilience and resistance against injustice.
Resistance Against Zamindari System
Gunamma’s revolt against the local Zamindar’s demands marked the beginning of her activism. When the Zamindar sought to claim a share of the crops cultivated by her family, Gunamma led the charge in refusing to comply. This revolt sparked a movement among farmers who were fed up with the exploitative Zamindari system.
Leading the Farmer’s Revolt
The appointment of Jagannadha rajamani Rajadev as the new ruler of Mandasa further exacerbated tensions. The Zamindars’ monopolization of forest resources fueled resentment among the people. Gunamma fearlessly led a movement to reclaim control of the forest wealth, organizing efforts to cut down trees and transport them on carts. In the face of police intervention, Gunamma remained resolute, refusing to back down.
Sacrifice and Legacy
Gunamma’s commitment to the cause of the poor farmers led her to the forefront of the struggle. Despite sustaining grave injuries in a police firing, Gunamma continued to inspire her comrades, urging them to carry on the fight. Tragically, on April 1, 1940, she succumbed to her wounds, becoming a martyr for the cause.
Honoring Veera Gunamma
In recognition of her sacrifice, a memorial was erected in Gunamma’s honor in 1988, and her native land was renamed Veera Gunamma Rajapuram.
However, despite her contributions, the sarkar’s neglect of her legacy has left the villagers feeling disillusioned. They call for official recognition of her death anniversary in government order, emphasizing the importance of preserving her memory for future generations.
