Meet Meena: The Heart Behind Hooked on Heat

Meena, the creative force behind the popular food blog Hooked on Heat, has a culinary journey that began much like many of ours – with a little bit of necessity and a lot of inspiration. As a young girl, she dreamt of hosting her own cooking show, inspired by her mom, a “magician in the kitchen.” This early fascination with food laid the groundwork for what would become her passion. Her cooking skills truly blossomed during her college years. Living in a hostel, faced with uninspiring cafeteria food, Meena decided to take matters into her own hands.

Armed with a ladle and a desire for delicious meals, she began her culinary adventures. This led to regular “recipe exchanges” over long-distance phone calls with her mom, where they’d discuss not just what they ate, but how to make it better and simpler. It was during this time that Meena discovered her deep enjoyment for cooking and the immense satisfaction of receiving compliments on her dishes.

A Family Affair: Hubby Dear and Baby Dear

Hooked on Heat isn’t just about Meena’s recipes; it’s a family affair! Her husband, affectionately known as Hubby Dear, plays a crucial role as the official “guinea pig” and taste-tester for all her culinary creations. He’s become quite the star among the blog’s admirers, adding a touch of humor and relatability to the kitchen antics. In the summer of 2011, their family grew with the arrival of Baby Dear.

From his first solid food, sweet potato, he quickly joined the ranks of the family’s food enthusiasts. It’s clear it won’t be long before he’s an official taste-tester alongside his dad, constantly exploring new flavors and textures.

Spicing Things Up: The “Heat” in Hooked on Heat

Meena’s philosophy is simple: a little spice can make any meal special. Her blog is her way of sharing her creativity and love for food, serving as a “food journal” that she hoped would lead to a cookbook. And her dream came true! She’s now the proud author of four cookbooks, including titles like The Easy 5-Ingredient Indian Cookbook and Instant Pot Vegan Indian Cookbook.

She also tackles a common misconception about Indian cooking – that it’s too difficult. Through her popular Indian 101 series, which even became a monthly column for The Mississauga News, Meena aims to simplify Indian cuisine and show that anyone can master its basics. So, if you’re ready to don an apron and embark on a delicious culinary journey, Hooked on Heat is the perfect place to start. Let the party begin!
