Giving a Boost to Street Vendors: Understanding the PM SVANidhi Scheme
Imagine the street vendors in our cities and towns – they sell everything from tasty snacks to fresh fruits and offer services like haircuts. The PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme is a special program started by the Indian government in June 2020 to help these hardworking individuals improve their lives and become a more recognized part of our economy.
Think of it as a way to give them a helping hand through small loans. These loans don’t require any security, making it easier for vendors to borrow money without worrying about putting up their belongings as collateral. The government plans to reach about 50 lakh vendors through this scheme, and the benefits related to interest on these loans will continue until March 2028.
How does the loan system work?
The scheme provides loans in stages. A vendor can first borrow up to ₹10,000. If they pay this back on time, they become eligible for a larger loan of ₹20,000 in the second stage, and even ₹50,000 in the third. The time given to repay these loans varies. What’s the benefit of paying back on time? Being responsible and paying back the loan when it’s due has its rewards. Not only does it open the door for bigger loans in the future, but the government also gives a 7% annual interest subsidy, which means they pay a part of the interest for the vendor.
On top of that, vendors who repay on time can also get a cashback reward of ₹1200 every year. And don’t worry about wanting to pay off the loan early – there are no extra charges for that! Who can benefit from this scheme? If you’re a street vendor who was working in a city or town on or before March 24, 2020, you’re likely eligible. This includes people selling fruits, vegetables, ready-to-eat food, or offering services like barber shops and laundry.
Even if a vendor doesn’t have an official vending certificate, they can still apply and might get a temporary one after the local authorities check their situation.
How can a vendor get a loan?
Applying for a loan under the PM SVANidhi scheme is designed to be simple. Street vendors can use an online application to apply and even track the progress of their application. The bigger picture: The main idea behind the PM SVANidhi scheme is to provide financial help to street vendors so they can recover their livelihoods, especially after the difficulties caused by the pandemic. By supporting them, the scheme also aims to contribute positively to the country’s overall economic growth. It’s about recognizing the importance of street vendors and helping them build a better future.
