Since its establishment in 2004, Ranga Shankara in Bengaluru has grown into one of India’s premier spaces dedicated solely to the performing arts. Over the past two decades, it has built a stellar reputation for offering its world-class auditorium to theatre troupes at affordable rates, making theatre accessible to a diverse audience. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by an open and grand staircase that set the tone for Ranga Shankara’s unique approach to the arts.
The Ranga Shankara Café is a must-visit, offering delightful dishes that celebrate local flavors alongside global favorites. Under the guidance of Anju, the café serves seasonal specialties inspired by the themes of the theatre’s festivals, from traditional akkirotti to the annual Onam feast, a highly anticipated event on the cultural calendar.
Adding to the theater’s super charm is ‘Paperback,’ a bookshop that has been a staple at Ranga Shankara since 2013. With an eclectic selection of books on literature, cinema, social sciences, and more, the shop reflects the intellectual and cultural spirit of the theater. Visitors can also browse through DVDs and a vast collection of theatre-related titles, with classics in both Kannada and English.
The stage, a 1575 sqft thrust designed by architect Shri Shahrukh Mistry, offers performers and directors a professional setup, tailored for productions large and small. Ranga Shankara also nurtures emerging talent through workshops and masterclasses, where experts and guides from various fields mentor the next generation.
From its celebrated annual Theatre Festival to a range of carefully curated performances, Ranga Shankara continues to be an inspirational hub, embodying Bengaluru’s rich theatre culture and fostering a thriving community of artists and audiences alike.
