Bama Faustina Soosairaj, a prominent Dalit poet and writer, was honored with the Verchol Dalit Literary Award at the two-day Verchol Dalit Literary Conclave, part of the Vaanam Arts Festival 2024. In her book “Sangati,” Bama explores the lives of several generations of women within the Dalit community. The narrative spans from the grandmother’s generation, represented by Velliamma Kizhavi, to the younger generations. The novel emphasizes the dual oppression faced by Dalit women, who suffer both as women and as members of the lowest caste.
A Unique Dalit Feminist Narrative
“Sangati” is a Dalit feminist narrative that incorporates autobiographical elements from the entire community. The novel comprises individual stories, anecdotes, and memories that depict the lives of women in the Paraiyar community in Tamil Nadu. These women are portrayed as daily wage earners who earn less than men and bear the financial burden of their families. The novel also addresses sexual harassment and abuse faced by these women in their workplaces.
A Voice for the Voiceless
Bama’s works mainly focus on Dalit women. She highlights the powerlessness of women who accept patriarchal roles due to lack of education. Her characters are depicted as social victims, easily targeted by oppressors. Through centuries of Hindu tradition, women have been silent sufferers, given secondary status in both family and society.
Honors and Accolades
The conclave featured a documentary on Bama’s life, showcasing her journey through numerous hardships. Noted filmmaker Pa Ranjith, who organized the event, expressed his admiration for Bama and her significant contributions to literature.
Additionally, Bama was awarded the Avvaiyar Award for 2024 by the Tamil Nadu state government, which includes ₹1.5 lakh and a citation. This award recognizes women excelling in social reforms, communal harmony, culture, journalism, and administration.
