Konda Reddy Burz (Buruju), also known as Kurnool Fort, is a historical bastion that underscores the significance of Kurnool city. Built by ruler Shri Achyuta Devaraya of the Vijayanagar Empire, this fort also features a very impressive underground tunnel connecting it to Gadwal city, located 52 km away.
Notably, this tunnel passes beneath the River Tungabhadra, showcasing the architectural brilliance and military strategy of medieval India.
The Konda Reddy Burz is uniquely designed in the shape of a massive pillar, featuring two storeys. The first storey contains an underground passage that extends approximately 25 km toward Alampur in the Mahbubnagar District.
This passage has long intrigued treasure hunters, with some discovering riches while the fates of others remain shrouded in mystery. Recently, following an attempt by a local figure to access the treasure, the passage has been sealed.
Despite the fort’s largely ruined state, parts of Konda Reddy Burz still stand as testaments to its former glory. Visitors can reach its highest point for panoramic views of Kurnool, making it a prominent landmark in the city.
At the base of Konda Reddy Burz lies the Erra Buruju, a vital component of the fort, constructed from red sandstone.
This watchtower played a significant role for successive dynasties, and it is surrounded by two ancient temples dedicated to Goddess Yellamma: Pedda Yellamma Temple to the southeast and Chinna Yellamma Temple to the northeast. Legends abound regarding hidden treasures within Erra Buruju, adding to its mystique.
The walls of Erra Buruju are adorned with symbols of historical importance. The southeastern wall features depictions of a buffalo and Goddess Yellamma, while the eastern side showcases a mythical lion and a sheep or royal boar.
On the northeastern wall, a rider on a royal elephant uproots a tree, symbolizing Lord Indra on his mount Airavath, accompanied by the divine Kalpavriksha tree.
