Livestock Research and Information Center Earns National Breed Conservation Award

The Livestock Research and Information Center (LRIC) in Bidar, India has received the prestigious National Level Breed Conservation Award from the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR). This award recognizes the LRIC’s outstanding contributions to the preservation and promotion of the Deoni cattle breed.

The Deoni, a native breed of the region, has been officially recognized by the NBAGR as an authentic Indian breed, thanks in part to the LRIC’s efforts.

The center has documented the breed’s unique characteristics, raised awareness among local farming communities, and provided crucial support to Deoni farmers through various extension activities.

A key project undertaken by the LRIC is the “Field Performance Recording of Deoni cattle in Bidar district of Karnataka.” This initiative gathers data on the performance of Deoni cattle in 21 villages across the Aurad and Bhalki taluks.

By collecting information from over 500 farmers and monitoring over 5,200 Deoni cattle, researchers gain valuable insights into the breed’s productivity and health, which informs conservation and breeding strategies.

The LRIC also employs technologies to bolster the Deoni population. They have implemented Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer Technology (MOET), resulting in the birth of eight healthy calves so far. This cutting-edge technique accelerates the propagation of superior Deoni genetics.

Recognizing the importance of nutrition, the LRIC has established a fodder museum showcasing 35 different varieties of fodder. This resource educates farmers on optimal feeding practices for their Deoni cattle.

The center also plays a important role in distributing quality Deoni breeding stock, having supplied bull calves to various government agencies in both Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Furthermore, the LRIC has produced an impressive 2.80 lakh frozen semen doses, ensuring the widespread availability of Deoni genetic material for breeding programs. The center also manages a herd of Deoni cattle, rearing and auctioning 300 animals to further promote the breed.

As stated by Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University Vice-Chancellor K.C. Veeranna, these combined efforts demonstrate the LRIC’s unwavering commitment to the Deoni breed’s future.
